Realm is a fully accessible building and features a lift to assist users to move from the ground level through to levels one and two.

Subheading: Restroom facilities

In recent years Maroondah City Council has taken a leadership role in advocating for facilities that meet the needs of all members of the community and Realm is no exception.

Realm includes standard and accessible restrooms, a parent’s room, which includes scaled toilets for young children, and a Changing Places restroom.

About Changing Places

In Australia standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability or their carers. People with profound and multiple learning disabilities often need extra facilities to allow them to use toilets comfortably.

In its search for a best practice solution, Maroondah City Council uncovered Changing Places toilets, which were successfully established in the United Kingdom in 2006 and had all the requirements to provide full accessibility. Fortunately, the UK team behind the initiative was happy to share their learning’s and contacts with Council.

Changing Places was then introduced to Australia in 2012, with Maroondah City Council establishing a ‘Changing Places Victoria’ consortium. Maroondah City Council also opened the first permanent Changing Places facility in Australia at Ringwood Lake Park in 2014.

Realm features a Changing Places restroom facility on Level 1.

Each Changing Places toilet provides:

  • a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench
  • a tracking hoist system
  • enough space
  • a safe and clean environment.
